SOHAR Port and Freezone

SOHAR Port and Freezone is a deep-sea port and free zone in the Sultanate of Oman, managed by Sohar Industrial Port Company (SIPC), and is a 50:50 joint venture between the Port of Rotterdam and the Sultanate of Oman. The free zone is a 4,500 hectare development, which together with the port, has attracted global investments of US$26 Billion.
Situated at the very heart of global trade routes connecting Europe and Asia, and strategically located outside the Strait of Hormuz, SOHAR plays a vital role in regional development, offering unprecedented opportunities for growth in the logistics, manufacturing and industrial sectors.
As one of the fastest growing port and free zone developments in the world, SOHAR contains four strategic clusters - logistics, petrochemicals, metals, and more recently the food cluster, which includes Oman`s first ever terminal to be dedicated to the handling of agricultural bulk.
The agri-terminal supports Oman`s strategic food reserves and joins independent terminals operated by world-class leading companies that include C. Steinweg Oman for general cargo, Oil Tanking Terminals & Company LLC for liquid cargo, and Hong-Kong based Hutchison Whampoa for containers.
SOHAR Freezone is also set to host the GCC`s first major cotton plant which manufactures a wide range of cotton yarn. The plant is operated by SV Pittie Sohar Textiles FZC-LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bombay Stock Exchange listed SVP Global Ventures Ltd. The facility will provide over 1,500 jobs and is expected to start commercial operations by late 2019. With an output of around 150 metric tons of yarn a day, the new SVP facility will be the first step in establishing a fully-fledged textile cluster in SOHAR Freezone. Downstream investments in knitting, weaving, spinning and fabric manufacturing are set to create a thriving textiles cluster, potentially generating thousands of new jobs for the local populace.
Meanwhile, the $6.5 billion Liwa Plastics Industries Complex (LPIC) is nearing completion at SOHAR. This is the largest of three strategic growth projects undertaken by Orpic to fulfil its vision of building an Omani integrated refining and petrochemical business. The project will be the first-of-its-kind in the Sultanate and will enable Oman to support a rapidly growing downstream plastics industry.
